The Piper Pirates boys tennis team made a strong showing at the 5A State Championships in Salina, Kansas, on May 16th and 17th, taking four players to the final stage of the season.
Leading the way were juniors Johnny Vogel and Baird Greenamyre, who capped off remarkable seasons by finishing 7th in a highly competitive doubles field. Their medal-winning performance marks a historic moment as they become the first Piper tennis players to ever place at the state tournament. Johnny and Baird finished the year with a stellar 33-5 record, claiming UKC League and Regional Championships along the way. They are also the first players in school history to reach both 20- and 30-win seasons, setting a new standard for Piper tennis excellence.
Joining them at state were first-time qualifiers Blake Taylor and Chri Htoo, both gaining invaluable experience on the biggest stage. Blake had a breakout postseason, winning the regional singles title by defeating both the No. 1 and No. 4 seeds in dramatic fashion. Chri Htoo displayed tremendous toughness and heart, securing a 4th-place finish at regionals to qualify for state, even playing his final match on a severely sprained ankle.
This year’s accomplishments highlight the growth of Piper’s boys tennis program and signal a bright future ahead.
