Pirates Bay at Piper High School has become a big hit, with teachers across the Piper School District hoping to see it expand to other schools. Located inside PHS, Pirates Bay offers a variety of beverages — including coffee, energy drinks, and snacks — and has quickly become a favorite among staff and students alike.
Teachers throughout the district have shared their excitement about the possibility of bringing Pirates Bay to their own buildings. They see the café not only as a convenience but also as an opportunity for students to gain valuable business experience.
“I would love to get Pirates Bay to collaborate with the other schools in our district,” said Kyle Kohler, Piper High School business teacher. “I think it would be great to showcase the students in our Business Academy and also support teachers at other schools. The classes that run Pirates Bay are working hard to make that a reality this year.”
Many educators believe expanding Pirates Bay district-wide would offer big advantages for both students and teachers. It could also introduce younger students to Piper’s academy system earlier in their education.
“Learning more about the academies early on could be part of their class projects,” said Vicky Nuñez, Piper High School ESOL teacher. “I know that in the primary grades, each year focuses on a different theme. Maybe when the focus is on business, those classes could take the lead on Pirates Bay.”
Beyond serving coffee, Pirates Bay provides students with hands-on experience in entrepreneurship and management.
“I think they’re always looking for a reason to get out of class,” joked Jennifer Franz, Piper High School journalism teacher. “But it’s especially neat for those students who want to run their own business because they really get to see how businesses work. It’s hands-on training.”
