Between buying lunch, new clothes and that daily pumpkin spice iced coffee, high school students spend more than you might think. When people picture high schoolers, they often imagine homework, sports and social life — but not how much money they actually go through each week.
“I’d say make a weekly budget and stick to it. Once you know how much you’re spending, it’s easier to save instead of wasting money on things you don’t really need,” senior Baylee Peghee said.
“I would say make a budget each week for how much money to spend,” junior Jordan Johnson said.
Spending can easily become a problem, which is why budgeting and setting limits can help students manage their money. Even though most students don’t have to worry about bills yet, learning to save early can help them avoid money problems in the future.
Many schools don’t offer classes that teach students about saving, investing or budgeting. As a result, many teens might not know how to handle their finances wisely.
“Some students do spend too much, but it’s mostly because they don’t realize how fast small purchases add up. Most of us just want to enjoy things now and don’t think about saving yet,” junior Alexis Crowley said.
